Which book has a diagram that depicts social change and technological advances as two opposing sine waves? If I can remember correctly, the point of the diagram is to show that sometimes advances in social behaviour surpass the advances in technology, creating need for new technology. And then, new technology gets created that nobody yet knows what to use for, until the cycle turns again. This creates a forward going motion that oscillates between technological advances and social change. I'm working on a book and I would like to use the original reference in the book. To clarify, I am looking for a book title and author.

Are technological advances in this century likely to change fundamentally what it means to be human? (Provided that there is not a collapse of global civilisation or a stagnation of global technological and scientific progress). If so, should this be an area for concern and greater discussion, or should we just let scientific progress and commerce deal with these questions? Carabatzis2000: I am not asking you to look at the current state of technology, but rather to extrapolate from current technological trends what you think might be the technological developments over the next 92 years and 6 months. The rate of progress in computing over the last 10 years has been astonishing and has already had a major impact on Artificial Intelligence; we are not going to be stuck with the current internet and computing technology for the rest of the century. Likewise for e.g., the progresses made in microbiology and genetics.
Do you agree that real technological change seems to be in a rut, not rapidly increasing as most people think? I would argue that anyone alive in 1870 lived not much different than people in Biblical times. However, that same person only had to wait 25 to 40 years (well within his life time) to witness every technological change of importance humanity ever conceived. If he died in 1980, he didn't miss anything except faster computers. In other words, as a child, he lived like an ancient Roman, but he died knowing what a phone, car, train, phonograph, airplane, TV, radio, photograph, cinema, electricity was. All of these things were invented within 2 or 3 decades. But, if someone was born in 1970, he hasn't really seen anything nearly as amazing as his great grandfather did. Not even close. Do you agree or not?
